Today, Turkmenistan marks a significant event - the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945, which occupies a special place in the national historical memory. Commemorative events are being held all over the country, reflecting deep respect for the feat of generations who defended peace and freedom, the state news agency TDH reported.

The National Leader of the Turkmen People, Chairman of the Khalk Maslakhaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov took part in the ceremony of laying flowers at the monuments of the memorial complex ‘People’s Memory’.

In his address to the nation on the occasion of the Victory Anniversary, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasised the important role of war and home front veterans in the modern development of the country. According to the head of state, their life path serves as an example of true patriotism, steadfastness and moral greatness for the younger generation, instilling in them a sense of duty to the Motherland, respect for the older generation and historical truth.

The source notes that more than one hundred citizens of Turkmenistan were honoured with the high title of Hero for their courage and heroism during the war, and thousands were awarded orders and medals. Among them is Berdimuhamed Annayev, great-grandfather of the current President and grandfather of the National Leader, whose biography has become a symbol of valour and devotion to the Fatherland.

A special page in the annals of memory is the handing over of the Battle standard of the 748th Rifle Regiment of the 206th Rifle Division, in which Berdimuhamed Annayev fought, to mark the 75th anniversary of the Victory in 2020. A delegation from the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation specially arrived in Ashgabat to participate in the ceremony.
