Lake Garakol, situated within the ‘Magtymguly’ Dayhan Association in the Shabat etrap of the Dashoguz velayat, is home to a large number of different bird species throughout the year. This was reported by the news website Turkmenportal.

In March and June 2026, experts from the ‘Gaplaňgyr’ State Nature Reserve carried out bird surveys. Among the species recorded were the whooper swan, the common shelduck, the wigeon, the red-headed diver, the magpie, various species of gulls, herons, ducks and other birds.

During the surveys, ecologists also spotted greater flamingos. Local herders reported that these birds have been visiting the lake for several years. The observations confirmed that flamingos are indeed among the inhabitants of Garakol. This species is listed in Turkmenistan’s Red Book.

In July, experts noted an increase in the number and diversity of birds along the lake’s shores. Little terns, great cormorants, meadow pipits, as well as birds with chicks, were recorded.

Ecologists emphasised the importance of further studying the Garakol natural complex and raising local residents’ awareness of environmental protection.
