Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan A. Gurbanov held a series of meetings in Phnom Penh on May 8–9, 2026, as part of the visit of the country’s delegation to the Kingdom of Cambodia. The talks took place with representatives of the government and the business community, according to the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
During a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of State, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia, Ith Sophy, the sides noted the high level of the first political consultations between the foreign ministries. It was emphasized that they will continue to develop bilateral agreements and expand cooperation.
The discussions covered political-diplomatic, trade-economic, and cultural-humanitarian areas. The sides advocated for the intensification of political dialogue, the development of contacts at the level of governments and parliaments, as well as the expansion of the legal framework. Cooperation within international organizations, including the UN, was also considered.
At a meeting with the President of the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce, Neak Oknha Kith Meng, prospects for economic cooperation were discussed. The sides noted the importance of direct contacts between entrepreneurs, the holding of business forums, trade missions, and online meetings. Priorities included digital trade, participation in exhibitions, exchange of delegations, development of small and medium-sized enterprises, and cooperation between special economic zones.
A meeting was also held with Cambodia’s Minister of Tourism, Huot Hak. Joint projects in the tourism sector, exchange of experience, and promotion of cultural heritage were discussed. The sides agreed to prepare a Memorandum of Understanding in the field of tourism.
Following the meetings, the commitment to developing a long-term partnership between Turkmenistan and Cambodia was reaffirmed.
