Turkmenistan is holding preliminary talks with international companies on the establishment of data centres for high-performance computing. Deputy Minister of Energy Serdar Saparov announced this at the CIET-2026 International Conference and Exhibition in Ashgabat, Turkmenportal reports.

According to Saparov, the implementation of these projects will make it possible to utilise surplus electricity, attract investment and develop high-tech infrastructure. The Deputy Minister also noted that the Law on Virtual Assets has been in force in the country since January 1, 2026.

The Ministry of Energy oversees 11 power plants with a total installed capacity of more than 6,500 megawatts. This capacity is sufficient to meet domestic demand and increase electricity exports. In addition, the construction of a unified ring power grid has been completed, improving the reliability of electricity supply.

The modernisation and digitalisation of power grids are also ongoing. Plans include the introduction of an automated commercial electricity metering system and smart meters, drawing on international experience.

With the support of the Asian Development Bank, the country's wind resources are being assessed to identify suitable sites for future wind power plants. Combined-cycle gas turbine units are also being introduced to reduce natural gas consumption and minimise environmental impact.

Particular attention is being paid to training specialists. The State Energy Institute of Turkmenistan provides practical training at solar and wind power facilities. The institute has also received EU Green Certificates in recognition of its achievements in energy efficiency and renewable energy use, and cooperates with the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ).

The conference Development of the Construction, Industrial, Chemical and Energy Sectors of Turkmenistan is being held in Ashgabat from November 3 to 5.
