The State Concern ‘Türkmengaz’ has reduced methane emissions at its facilities by 30% from June 2024 to September 2025, using satellite data and international cooperation. This was announced by Muhammetberdi Byashiyev, Head of the Environmental Protection Department at the Natural Gas Research Institute of the ‘Türkmengaz’ State Concern, at the OGT 2025 pre-conference session in Ashgabat, according to the news website Turkmenportal.

M. Byashiyev noted that in 2023, satellites identified 20 methane super-emitters, nine of which were located at the concern's facilities. Currently, according to the MARS programme, such emission sources are virtually non-existent. Satellite monitoring allows leaks to be eliminated within 2-3 days by the company's own specialists.

The representative of the Research Institute thanked the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO), the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for providing the data. As part of the EU project ‘Green Development of Turkmenistan’ for 2024–2028, an information and analytical centre has been established at the Natural Gas Research Institute; equipment for monitoring greenhouse gases is expected to arrive in the near future.

The session was held ahead of the 30th International Conference and Exhibition ‘Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan – 2025’, in which more than 70 foreign and about 30 local companies have confirmed their participation, and about 1,400 delegates are expected to attend. The organisers are ‘Türkmengaz’, ‘Türkmennebit’, ‘Türkmengeologiýa’ and ‘Turkmen Energy Forum’.
