Representatives of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan held a meeting with experts of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Tamara Kutonova and John Marco Church on 14 May. This was reported by the press service of the national parliament.

According to the source, within the framework of the talks, the importance of the ongoing work on the rational use of water resources as the main condition for the harmonious development of the agro-industrial complex and other sectors was noted.

In addition, the sides considered the directions of bilateral partnership, as well as the activity of the parliaments on issues related to environmental security. The sides also stressed the importance of Turkmenistan's accession to a number of international documents on the efficient use of water resources, including the Helsinki Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes.

Special emphasis was made on the importance of Turkmenistan's laws ‘On Nature Protection’, ‘On Drinking Water’, ‘On Environmental Analysis’ in strengthening the legal, economic and institutional framework for programme activities.
