Within the framework of the XXV International Exhibition and Conference “White City Ashgabat – 2026” (WCA 2026), a high-level round table was held in the capital under the auspices of the United Nations on the theme “From global dialogue to practical implementation: sustainable, inclusive and smart cities”. The platform served as a multilateral format for discussing the introduction of modern urban approaches into governance systems in Central Asian countries. This was reported by the publication “Turkmenistan: Golden Age”.
The discussion was attended by representatives of the UN, development banks, diplomatic missions, municipal planning authorities, international urban development experts, and youth delegations. The main focus was placed on urban planning, infrastructure investment, energy efficiency, the development of low-carbon transport, digital management systems, and social inclusion.
UN-Habitat Regional Advisor Katja Schaefer noted that the transition to sustainable cities requires not only dialogue but also practical implementation of solutions. According to her, the experience of cities such as Arkadag, as well as Ashgabat’s long-term planning approaches, demonstrate the importance of digital infrastructure, carbon footprint reduction, and systemic resilience. UN-Habitat expressed readiness for further cooperation with Turkmenistan.
Participants discussed the role of modern megacities in reducing climate risks and promoting regional integration. It was concluded that effective urban development is possible through a shift from individual projects to comprehensive urban ecosystems that include housing, transport, digital services, and environmental standards.
Ashgabat city mayor Rahym Gandymov noted that the capital of Turkmenistan is developing as a city of peace, progress, and international dialogue, where traditions, architecture, and modern technologies are combined.
UN Resident Coordinator in Turkmenistan Dmitry Shlapachenko emphasized the importance of partnerships in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 11. He noted that the WCA 2026 platform contributes to the transition from discussion to practical action.
The conclusions and recommendations developed during the round table will be used in further WCA 2026 events, including discussions on sustainable urban development, green industry, energy, and digital transformation.
