Day of Remembrance for the Victims of the Ashgabat Earthquake
10 06.10.2025

On the night of 6 October 1948, Ashgabat was rocked by a powerful earthquake measuring 9 on the Richter scale. The epicentre was located near the city, causing widespread destruction: thousands of homes, hospitals, schools and industrial facilities were destroyed. This was reported by the IIC of Turkmenistan.

Despite the tragedy, the city's residents showed resilience and mutual assistance. Within a few hours, the military, doctors and volunteers came to the aid of the victims. From the very first days, large-scale work began to clear the rubble and rebuild the city: builders and engineers from all over the country erected new houses, laid roads and restored communications.

The symbol of the city's rebirth was the local history museum, created on the site of an ancient mosque destroyed in the earthquake. The memory of the victims is preserved to this day: in 2014, the ‘Halk hakydasy’ Memorial Complex was opened, dedicated to the victims and heroes of Turkmenistan.

Modern white marble Ashgabat is a testament to the resilience of a people reborn thanks to the labour of generations and state support. Every year on 6 October, the Day of Remembrance is marked, when the Turkmen people honour the victims of the earthquake and the heroes of the country, strengthening historical memory and national unity.
