WHO technical advisory mission held in Turkmenistan

A technical advisory mission led by experts from the WHO Regional Office for Europe and organised by the WHO Country Office took place in Turkmenistan from 27 to 29 June. This was reported by the news website Turkmenportal. WHO experts supported the country's efforts to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of chronic respiratory diseases, including COPD and bronchial asthma. During the visit, strategic meetings were held with representatives of the Ministry of Health to discuss achievements and experiences in implementing relevant programmes. The experts also visited health facilities involved in the pilot implementation of clinical pathways for patients, from prevention to palliative care. On 28 June, a seminar on improving approaches to the treatment of COPD and asthma was held in Ashgabat, with a focus on evidence-based methods and an interdisciplinary approach. In addition, experts helped to adapt national clinical protocols to international standards and principles of evidence-based medicine.


The President of Ethiopia has been invited to Turkmenistan to participate in a UN forum

Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie Amde has received an invitation from Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedov to attend the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries, which will be held in August in Avaza. The invitation was handed over by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Atajan Movlamov, during a meeting with the Ambassador of Ethiopia, Jemal Becker Abdullah. The Ethiopian side expressed interest in high-level participation and noted Turkmenistan's neutral and peaceful policy. Turkmen scientists have developed a technology for obtaining a valuable antioxidant from grapes

The biotechnology laboratory at the International Scientific-Technological Park of the Academy of Sciences of Turkmenistan has successfully completed research into the extraction of the bioflavonoid resveratrol from the red grape variety ‘Late Vavilov’. Scientists have developed a technology for extracting this valuable antioxidant from various parts of the grapevine, including the skin of the berries, shoots and seeds. This was reported by the online publication ‘Turkmenistan: Golden age’. The State Intellectual Property Service of Turkmenistan has officially registered the copyright for this development. The researchers paid particular attention to the ‘Late Vavilov’ variety, which was bred by Turkmen breeders in the 1970s and has unique characteristics. Resveratrol is a powerful natural antioxidant with proven effectiveness in strengthening the cardiovascular system, protecting cells from ageing and preventing age-related changes. Its use is promising in the pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. As noted by Altyn Rahmanova, head of the biotechnology laboratory, this discovery is in line with the priorities of the ‘Strategy for the Development of the Science for 2024–2052’ and the state programme for the development of biotechnology. The development by Turkmen scientists opens up new opportunities for the creation of innovative medicines and cosmetics based on local plant raw materials.


The first neurosurgical surgery on a newborn was performed in Turkmenistan

Turkmen doctors have performed neurosurgery for the first time on one of their youngest patients diagnosed with occlusive hydrocephalus. The medical intervention was successful and made possible thanks to comprehensive support from the industry and initiatives by the Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov Charitable Foundation. This was reported by IIC. The patient was a one-month-old baby from the Balkan velayat. After conducting a detailed examination and obtaining an interdisciplinary opinion, doctors decided on surgical treatment. The operation was performed at a national medical facility by Turkmen specialists and was completed without complications. As of today, the child's condition is stable: he is under observation, responding to his surroundings and showing positive signs of improvement. This case is a striking example of the introduction of advanced medical technologies and the development of expertise in the field of paediatric neurosurgery.


A meeting on women's reproductive health care was held in Ashgabat

A coordination meeting dedicated to ensuring women's access to reproductive health services was held in Ashgabat under the auspices of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The event brought together representatives of relevant ministries of Turkmenistan and international organisations to develop effective solutions. The main purpose of the meeting was to conduct a comprehensive assessment of the resources available in reproductive health clinics in the capital and other regions of the country. Participants discussed ways to optimise the distribution of medical supplies and developed a procurement plan to provide women from at-risk groups with the necessary medicines and materials. The discussion was attended by specialists from the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry, the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan, as well as experts from UNFPA and the United Nations Development Programme. Turkmenistan and UNFPA coordinate efforts in the field of health protection

On 12 June 2025, a meeting of the Coordination Council of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Turkmenistan was held at the UN office in Ashgabat. The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry, the Ministry of Finance and Economy of Turkmenistan, as well as experts from UNFPA and UNDP, according to IIC. The purpose of the meeting was to assess the availability and needs of resources used to ensure reproductive health in medical institutions in Ashgabat and the country's velayats. Participants discussed the possibility of more efficient redistribution of existing stocks, as well as the development of a procurement plan to replenish critical supplies needed to support women at risk. The meeting provided an update on the current status of supplies and their projected consumption. Particular attention was paid to issues of timely delivery, optimising accounting and reporting, and finding solutions to expand coverage and improve the effectiveness of reproductive health programmes.


WHO training on zoonotic disease control held in Turkmenistan

A five-day training for national specialists, organised with the assistance of the World Health Organization Country Office and the Ministry of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan, has been completed in Turkmenistan. According to the source, the training course was aimed at strengthening knowledge on prevention, monitoring and management of zoonotic diseases. During the training, the participants learnt the actual methods of preventing the spread of zoonotic infections, mechanisms of their early detection, as well as approaches to interagency co-operation within the framework of the ‘One Health’ concept. The training was conducted by Natalia Pshenichnaya, WHO Regional Office for Europe specialist, in co-operation with representatives of the relevant ministry, veterinary services and other relevant agencies. The training also focused on promising steps to improve the system of epidemiological control and surveillance of zoonotic diseases in the country.


Ashgabat prepares for large-scale peace and trust races as part of Europe Day celebrations

On 31 May, festive races of 2, 5 and 10 kilometres will be held in the capital of Turkmenistan to mark the celebration of Europe Day 2025. The event is organised by the European Union Delegation in partnership with the State Committee of Turkmenistan for Physical Culture and Sport, the Ashgabat City Administration and the Run-Rush public movement. This was reported by the online publication ‘Turkmenistan: Golden age’. Runners will start and finish at the intersection of Turkmenbashi Avenue and 10 ýyl Abadançylyk Street (formerly Moskovskaya Street), and the routes will be laid out around the picturesque Independence Park. The organisers have provided for different formats of participation: family teams with children under 16 will be able to prove themselves in a 2 km race, while more experienced participants aged 16 and older can try their hand at 5 and 10 km distances. Both professional athletes and sports enthusiasts of all ages can participate in the races. The morning will begin with fun sports competitions and warm-ups, and after the races, participants will receive commemorative gifts and attend an awards ceremony for the winners. The event aims to highlight the importance of a healthy lifestyle and strengthen the spirit of international cooperation.


WHO training course on zoonotic disease prevention for trainers launched in Turkmenistan

From 26 to 30 May 2025, the Public Health and Nutrition Centre of Turkmenistan is hosting a training for national trainers on prevention, surveillance and treatment of zoonotic diseases. The event is organised with the support of the WHO Country Office in Turkmenistan within the framework of the Pandemic Fund project aimed at strengthening pandemic preparedness through a ‘One Health’ approach in Central Asia. It is reported by IIC. The participants of the course were specialists of the State Veterinary Service under the Ministry of Agriculture and the State Sanitary and Epidemiological Service of the Ministry of Health of Turkmenistan. Professor Natalia Pshenichnaya, WHO international consultant on zoonosis control, conducts the classes. According to Arslan Soltanmyradov, Head of the International and Scientific Relations Department of the State Veterinary Service, the course plays a key role in strengthening the country's capacity to control zoonoses, which contributes to improving epidemiological well-being and protecting human and animal health. The main objective of the training is to train national trainers, who will subsequently conduct cascade trainings for specialists at regional and local levels.


Turkmen border guards received a course in tactical medicine from the OSCE

A three-day tactical medicine course for 31 officers of Turkmenistan's Border Guard Service and medics from the Central Hospital concluded in Ashgabat. The event was organised by the OSCE as part of a project to strengthen the capacity of the Border Guard Service with financial support from Germany. This is reported by the IIC. The course participants learnt techniques of emergency aid in the field, methods of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the peculiarities of transporting the injured and the specifics of working in extreme natural conditions. Practical exercises included simulations of real emergencies with training on how to deal with various traumas. The acquired skills will enable border guards to respond more effectively to incidents in difficult natural and climatic conditions.


Turkmenistan and WHO discussed co-operation in the health sector at WHA78 session

Turkmenistan's Health Minister Murad Mammedov met with Dr Hans Kluge, Director of the WHO Regional Office for Europe, in Geneva on 22 May this year within the framework of the 78th session of the World Health Assembly. During the talks, the parties discussed priority areas of development of Turkmenistan's health care system, paying special attention to the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases, measures to combat cancer and improving the system of response to infectious threats. Dr Kluge noted Turkmenistan's achievements in the health sector and confirmed WHO's readiness for further cooperation. Particular emphasis was placed on the development of early diagnosis and screening programmes for cancer diseases. The meeting confirmed the mutual interest of the parties in strengthening partnership for sustainable development of the health care system and improving the quality of medical services.


The medical centers of Turkmenistan have received modern laboratory equipment

Medical centres of Turkmenistan's velayats, the capital and Arkadag city received modern laboratory equipment as part of the project ‘Strengthening the clinical and laboratory service in Turkmenistan’. This was reported by the news agency ‘Turkmenistan: Golden age’. According to the source, the medical centres were equipped with 10 sets of equipment IMMULITE 2000 XPI, which is designed for conducting diagnostic studies of various diseases using the method of Chemi Luminescent Immuno Assay (CLIA). In addition, 15 sets of RAPIDPoint 500e Blood Gas Systems have been installed in velayats’ medical centres. These analysers are designed for rapid diagnosis of patients' condition by determining the gas composition and acid-base balance of the blood.
