The ‘Karakum Glow’ gas crater is gradually fading after half a century of burning
07.06.2025A gas crater known as the ‘Karakum Glow’ has been burning in Turkmenistan for over 50 years. This phenomenon arose in 1971 as a result of drilling operations. This was reported by the Stavropol website. However, today the fire has significantly weakened. The intensity of the burning has decreased threefold: if earlier the light from the crater was visible for kilometres, now it is only noticeable near the crater itself, which has a diameter of about 70 metres. The reason for the weakening of the flame is obvious — the depletion of the gas reserves that feed the fire. Despite Turkmenistan's rich deposits, the underground methane reserves in the crater area are coming to an end. Environmentalists see this as a positive sign: methane is a powerful greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming.
Turkmenistan took part in the fourth meeting of the Central Asia-India Dialogue
07.06.2025The fourth meeting of the ‘Central Asia – India’ Dialogue took place in New Delhi on 6 June with the participation of Turkmenistan's Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov. During the event, the parties discussed key areas of multilateral cooperation, paying particular attention to the implementation of major infrastructure projects. This was reported by the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Turkmenistan. Foreign Minister Rashid Meredov emphasised the strategic importance of the TAPI gas pipeline project for regional energy security and the need to intensify work on its completion. Special attention was paid to the development of transport corridors connecting Central Asia with Indian ports, which opens up new prospects for trade and economic cooperation. During the discussion of security issues, the Turkmen side noted the importance of Turkmenistan's neutral status as a factor of stability in the region. The participants in the dialogue also considered opportunities for cooperation in the field of high technology, including the creation of a joint programme of scientific and technical partnership. At the end of the meeting, a joint statement was adopted confirming the parties' readiness to deepen cooperation in trade, economic, transport and humanitarian spheres.

07.06.2025On 6 June, Turkmenistan's Foreign Affairs Minister Rashid Meredov held talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi as part of a collective meeting of Central Asian foreign ministers. The minister conveyed warm greetings from the leadership of Turkmenistan and confirmed his readiness to deepen bilateral cooperation. This was reported by the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Turkmenistan. The key topic of the talks was the acceleration of the implementation of the strategic Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline project. The parties discussed specific steps to resume construction work and give new impetus to this energy megaproject. During the meeting, the importance of the North-South International Transport Corridor, which is to connect the transport systems of Turkmenistan and India with the markets of the Middle East, the Caspian region and Europe, was also noted. Particular attention was paid to expanding cooperation in such priority areas as energy, transport logistics, high technology and pharmaceuticals.
Turkmenistan has begun harvesting winter wheat
07.06.2025The winter wheat harvest has begun in Turkmenistan. The harvesting campaign has already started in the Ahal, Lebap and Mary velayats. Farmers in the Balkan and Dashoguz regions will begin harvesting on 11 June. This was reported by the IIC. At a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on 29 May, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov officially announced the start of the harvest, emphasising its strategic importance for the country's food security. This year, it is planned to harvest 1.4 million tonnes of grain from 690,000 hectares of cultivated land. Modern grain harvesters and mobile repair services are being used for the harvest. Particular attention is being paid to logistics, with 24-hour fuel delivery, crop removal and grain quality control organised. This year, harvesting is taking place in fields sown with high-yielding varieties of locally bred wheat (‘Serdar’, ‘Arkadag’, ‘Pyragy’). A landmark event of the campaign was the signing by the President of a Decree raising the purchase prices for wheat and cotton, which should stimulate the further development of the agro-industrial complex.
Turkmenistan celebrated International Russian Language Day
07.06.2025On 6 June, Turkmenistan held celebrations dedicated to International Russian Language Day and the 226th anniversary of the birth of Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin. The main event was the laying of flowers at the bust of the great poet, which was attended by students from the A.S. Pushkin joint Turkmen-Russian secondary school. This was reported by the IIC. Young readers gave a heartfelt performance of the classic's poems, highlighting the importance of his work. Special emphasis was placed on the role of Pushkin's poetry during the Great Patriotic War, when the poet's lines helped to maintain spiritual fortitude both at the front and in the rear. The event was a vivid demonstration of Turkmenistan's respectful attitude towards the Russian language and literary heritage. Participants in the solemn meeting emphasised that Pushkin's work continues to unite peoples, remaining relevant in the modern world.
TESC-2025 scientific and practical conference was held in Turkmenistan
06.06.2025On 5 May, the State Concern ‘Türkmengaz’s Natural Gas Research Institute hosted the International Scientific and Practical Conference ‘Environmental aspects of implementing innovative technologies in the development of hydrocarbon fields’ (TESC-2025). The conference was organised by the State Concern ‘Türkmengaz’, ‘Türkmennebit’ and the State Corporation ‘Türkmengeologiýa’, according to the state news agency TDH. The event brought together representatives of national and foreign energy companies, international organisations and financial institutions. Participants discussed current challenges for sustainable development in the industry, the introduction of advanced solutions in hydrocarbon production and processing, as well as issues related to reducing negative impacts on the environment. The opening ceremony was attended by members of the government, heads of relevant departments, representatives of the diplomatic corps, the media and the expert community. The conference continued with thematic sessions on energy prospects, environmental issues and the role of human capital. Representatives of organisations such as the UN, OSCE, ADB, the EBRD, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the International Energy Agency (IEA), the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), as well as international companies including CNPC, PETRONAS, Dragon Oil, Eni S.p.A. and others. Special attention was paid to issues related to reducing methane and carbon dioxide emissions, processing associated gases, building modern gas processing complexes, and introducing environmentally friendly technologies. Innovative approaches to utilising sour gases and developing renewable energy sources were also discussed. Following the conference, a final document was adopted and meetings were held between representatives of the national fuel and energy industry and foreign partners to discuss further cooperation.
Turkmen karatekas successfully performed at the tournament in Samarkand
06.06.2025An international kyokushinkai karate tournament was held in Samarkand (Uzbekistan) from 30 May to 1 June, where the national team of Turkmenistan won a number of prizes. This is reported by the IIC of Turkmenistan. In men's categories Suleymandurdy Sahedov and Meylis Pashakuliev became champions in the weights up to 70 kg and up to 90 kg respectively, and Myrat Ekayev won silver in the category over 90 kg. Among boys 14-15 years old Bagtyyar Yegenmyradov became the winner in the weight up to 60 kg, bronze went to Ylham Dovletmyradov (over 60 kg) and Yazdurdy Yazdurdyev (up to 50 kg). In the women's category of 14-15 years old over 55kg the whole podium was taken by representatives of Turkmenistan: Lachin Pevieva - gold, Gulnur Saparmyradova - silver. Gurbanbibi Annamuradova (up to 45kg) also won silver. In the category of boys 16-17 years old up to 55 kg Turkmen athletes again took the whole podium: Akmyrat Omarov - gold, Dayanch Dovletov - silver, Soyench Nonikov - bronze. The performance of the national team confirmed the high level of training of athletes and development of kyokushinkai karate in Turkmenistan.
